The GO! Summer Youth Program

The GO! Summer Youth Program

Operation Care held its 3rd annual Summer Youth Program (SYP)! We had 12 participants that ranged from 12 years old to 17 years old. Youth learned about a number of topics including, but not limited to; healthy relationships, drugs and alcohol prevention, anti-bullying, sexual assault, personal hygiene and so much more. Students were offered opportunities to teach their peers about these topics as well. The students prepared presentations and presented during class time under the guidance of our group facilitators. It was amazing to watch the youth learn, understand and teach each other.

This year we also held a Jr. SYP for ages 8 -12.  We held classes in four different locations in the community and taught a different topic each week at the various locations.  The topics consisted of anger management, anti-bullying, drugs, alcohol and peer pressure, healthy relationships, healthy touching puppet show and positive self- esteem.  The program has had up to 10 children participate.  These topics are important to ensuring that the youth of Amador County grow up healthy and violence free!  We are excited to offer this curriculum to the younger children of Amador County and hope that the program will continue to grow in summers to come!

We asked the youth how they to celebrate completion of the program, and they wanted to go on a field trip to Six Flags. We then posed the question to the kids of how we could raise money to be able to go on this field trip and they decided that we could raise the money through fundraising. The kids worked alongside staff to plan a bake sale and car detail. By planning and working this fundraiser the kids took pride in themselves and the product they made and were able to walk away with a sense of accomplishment knowing that they had paid for the fieldtrip with all of their hard work.

We currently have classes throughout the year offered to our older youth but would like to get the younger youth consistently involved as well.  If you are interested in having a class at your location or would like to sign your youth up for our SYP, call us at 223-2897 and ask for Natalie or Anna.
